PNG vs WebP: which should you use?
A practical comparison for websites, apps, and exports — plus how to convert between them without uploading files.
When PNG is the better choice
PNG is lossless and supports full alpha transparency. Use it for logos, UI assets, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges or text. PNG is universally supported and predictable, but files are often larger than WebP or AVIF.
When WebP is the better choice
WebP usually produces smaller files than PNG or JPG at similar visual quality. It supports transparency and is ideal for photos and mixed-content images on the web. All modern browsers support WebP; for legacy workflows you may still keep a PNG fallback.
Quick decision guide
Need pixel-perfect transparency for a logo or icon? Choose PNG. Publishing photos or hero images where load speed matters? Choose WebP. Unsure? Convert a sample both ways and compare visually — PixBench lets you do that locally without uploading.
